A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in national projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
