Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of heroes, and a thrilling plot featuring divine entities, demons, and dark forces increasing in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

The third episode finished on a major cliffhanger and presented the premier party of characters who will split off from the central cast to undertake their separate journey, apart from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table consists of Teor (brought to life by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), the cleric (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

The Reason for Division

Given 13 cast members, it was obvious from the beginning that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

This explains, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, intertwining the personal journeys before splitting into three separate parties: Fighters, Strategists, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

According to the DM, the combat-focused party is for players who enjoy a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven story mode where peaceful solutions are rare.

Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest the cleric might look out of place, but the events of episode 3 demonstrate why these five characters are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Reasons to Leave

For one thing, the group understands precisely where to proceed after a violent opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose passing kicked off the campaign’s events—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, entering Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting the character, and taking all the enchanted items to auction.

The traitor then paid off his obligations and escaped to a secure base in the northern region, above the urban center, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each member has a personal reason to exit the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as the companion and best friend, seeks retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure knows the region and advises that it is a dangerous environment.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having resisted his family’s wishes to eliminate Teor and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their reputation as key figures in the powerful family could enable the party access places they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, The fighter swore a life debt to Wicander for his rescue and will now go with him wherever.

Wanted and Hunted

In addition, all of them are wanted by the authorities that control Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city no longer safe:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and The healer turned against House Halovar and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • The target is marked for death by the family.

This results in them no alternative but to journey toward Timmony in search of Casimir.

Future Episodes

According to episode three’s follow-up content, we find out that the combat party won’t be around the following episode, leaving the other eight players to form the Questers and Schemers groups.

Audiences can anticipate discovering which characters will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, released on October 24.
